Questions to Ask Your Doctor


Following initial X-rays or MRIs related to diagnosis

  • At what level does my child’s spine end?
  • At what level does my child’s spinal cord end?
  • What is the Renshaw classification of my child?
  • What physical structures are impacted? (organs, legs, heart, etc.)
  • Are there any additional syndromes or conditions present?
  • Do you have experience with individuals who have this condition?
  • What kinds of follow up appointments should I expect?

Considerations for surgery:

  • What are the pre-surgical procedures?
  • What is the post surgical recovery time?
  • When can my child return to school?
  • What is the anticipated stay in the hospital?
  • What are the potential complications?
  • What considerations have been given to the unique physical structures that my child may have due to SA/CRS?  Should additional ultra-sounds, MRI’s or xrays be done to ensure that physical structures are where they are expected to be?
  • What is the anticipated outcome?
  • What kinds of issues might I see that indicate a problem with recovery or in the future?
  • What are the long term implications?
  • What pain might my child experience and what is the pain treatment plan?
  • When will the post op. visit take place? Has it been pre-scheduled?
  • Will  you be present and available to respond during the length of the recovery period in case there are any complications?
